Established in 2007 under the World Premier International Research Center Initiative (WPI) of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the University of Osaka Immunology Frontier Research Center (IFReC) is home to some of Japan's and the world's most distinguished immunologists, including Professor Shimon Sakaguchi, recipient of the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, and Professor Shizuo Akira, recipient of the 2026 Japan Prize. IFReC conducts world-class research worthy of the University of Osaka's reputation for excellence in immunology. Through the promotion of Human Immunology, the development of next-generation researchers, and the strengthening of international collaboration, IFReC advances basic research aimed at developing treatments for major immune-related diseases, including infectious diseases, autoimmune disorders, allergies, and cancer.
