About
Pretoria Energy was established in 2012 with the development of its first anaerobic digestion plant in Chittering, Cambridgeshire, supplying green energy directly into the UK National Grid. From this single site, the company has grown into one of the largest vertically integrated biogas producers in the UK and Europe, operating a fully controlled value chain that spans crop cultivation, gas production, liquefaction, storage and distribution. Pretoria Energy now operates multiple AD facilities across Cambridgeshire, with a fifth plant commissioned in 2025 and a sixth due for completion in late 2026 to early 2027 as part of its continued expansion programme. To support these operations, the company cultivates more than 10,000 hectares—around 25,000 acres—of regenerative farmland, producing its own energy crops and ensuring full traceability from seed to wheel. This closed‑loop farming model strengthens sustainability, guarantees consistent feedstock quality and enhances long‑term supply security. As part of this integrated system, Pretoria Energy also produces food‑ and beverage‑grade biogenic CO₂ entirely through renewable processes, providing a secure domestic source at a time when UK CO₂ supply constraints highlight the need for non‑fossil alternatives. The company is also the UK’s largest producer of Bio‑LNG, manufactured from upgraded biomethane at its AD facilities. This renewable fuel delivers significant reductions in CO₂ emissions compared with diesel and supports both Pretoria Energy’s own logistics operations and the wider commercial haulage and industrial sectors. The fuel is produced using 100% renewable processes, offering a carbon‑negative profile and reducing dependence on imported fossil LNG. Pretoria Energy’s Bio‑LNG production is supported by an expanding national renewable gas refuelling network through Roadgas, the UK infrastructure company acquired in partnership with Mercuria in 2023. Roadgas designs, builds and operates Bio‑CNG and Bio‑LNG stations across the country, giving fleet operators reliable access to domestic biomethane and accelerating the decarbonisation of UK heavy transport. Building on these capabilities, Pretoria Energy launched Pretoria Bio‑Truck, the UK’s first fully integrated pay‑per‑mile Bio‑LNG HGV leasing model. This innovative offering combines modern low‑carbon trucks, full maintenance, and guaranteed renewable Bio‑LNG supply into a simple, predictable package that removes capital expenditure and simplifies the transition to low‑carbon transport. Customers gain access to a complete end‑to‑end solution backed by Pretoria Energy’s vertically integrated fuel system—the only model in the UK that controls production, liquefaction, logistics and nationwide refuelling. With Roadgas infrastructure ensuring operators are never more than 100 miles from a Bio‑LNG station, fleets can transition to low‑carbon transport without operational compromise. As fuel prices rise, emissions legislation tightens and sustainability becomes increasingly important across supply chains, the Pretoria Bio‑Truck model helps operators reduce costs while achieving significant carbon reductions. The structure of the model allows commercial terms to be tailored to each operator, ensuring flexibility without compromising operational performance. Through its integrated farming operations, AD technology, carbon capture, Bio‑LNG production, logistics capability and national refuelling infrastructure, Pretoria Energy delivers reliable, carbon‑negative energy solutions that strengthen UK energy security and accelerate the transition to low‑carbon transport and industry.
