Company History
Founded in 1936 by Fukuma Sugita as Sugita Fukuma Shoten, the company has continued to evolve across generations while maintaining its commitment to quality, innovation, and social contribution. In 1963, the company was reorganized as Sugita Shoten Co., Ltd. In 2001, under the leadership of second-generation President Yasuo Sugita, the company was renamed Sugita Co., Ltd. In 2023, Yoshiyuki Sugita assumed the role of third-generation President, leading the company into its next stage of growth and innovation. Since its founding, Sugita Co., Ltd. has pursued product development that responds to social needs, with a particular focus on functionality, sustainability, safety, and design. Awards & Recognition
Sugita Co., Ltd. has been widely recognized for its innovative product development, design excellence, and contributions to society. In 2017, the company received the Grand Prize at ANA wonderFLY, a competition organized by All Nippon Airways (ANA) for products that redefine conventional ideas of travel. In 2021, one of the company’s products was selected for the Ministry of the Environment’s Plastic Smart Campaign. Featuring a world-first mechanism, the umbrella was recognized as a new category of product that is compact to carry, resistant to strong winds, capable of releasing trapped heat, and effective in reducing umbrella waste. Also in 2021, the company was selected for the 100 Contemporary Japanese Designs program organized by The Japan Foundation, an institution under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. The product was chosen as one of 100 representative Japanese products and has been exhibited in more than 35 countries over a period of more than 10 years. In 2025, the company’s product was selected by the Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition as the only officially recognized product for heatstroke prevention at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai.
